So often I meet women who tell me, “I don’t have a style.” They’ve gone along with a spouse’s taste, collected pieces from different seasons of life, or tried to pull together what they had without a clear direction. The result? A home that feels mismatched, confusing, and anything but reflective of who they really are. They’re not sure how to find their interior design style.
But here’s the truth: not having a style isn’t a flaw. It’s an opportunity. Interior design is about more than labels like modern or boho. It’s about creating a framework that helps you uncover what feels like you. And when you begin to intentionally shape your interiors – with energy, meaning, and purpose – your home becomes more than just four walls. It becomes a foundation that supports your daily life and ripples outward into everything you do. Spoiler alert – this is our favorite!!
If you’ve ever wondered how to find your interior design style, this guide will give you the clarity and confidence to start.
It’s more common than you think. Many women come to me saying they’ve never had the chance to define their own style. Here are a few reasons why:
Living with someone else’s preferences: A spouse, partner, or family member often led the way in choosing furniture, colors, and layouts.
Inherited or hand-me-down pieces: Collecting random items over time without a clear vision can leave a space feeling disjointed.
Past experiences or trauma: Early life environments can shape how we approach “home”; sometimes leaving us disconnected from our own voice.
Overwhelm: With so many styles and options available, it can feel easier to avoid making choices altogether.
What’s left is a home that doesn’t feel aligned. The good news? You can absolutely find your style, starting right where you are.
Instead of chasing trends or searching for a label, think of uncovering your style as creating a personal roadmap. Here’s a simple framework to help you start.
Your home should be more than “pretty.” It should feel right. Ask yourself:
Do I want this space to feel calm or energizing?
Should it inspire focus or invite rest?
Do I crave a sense of grounded warmth or airy lightness?
Your feelings are the compass. When you begin with emotion, design choices become less about “what’s trendy” and more about “what nurtures me.”
Your style isn’t missing; it’s hiding in plain sight. Look to the details of your life for clues:
Clothing: The fabrics, colors, and silhouettes you naturally reach for.
Nature & travel: Do you feel most alive by the ocean, in the forest, or in a bustling city?
Objects you cherish: Family heirlooms, art, or small keepsakes that hold meaning.
These touchpoints are not random; they’re threads of your authentic aesthetic. Collect images or create a simple mood board. Soon, patterns will emerge.
Once you’ve explored feelings and inspiration, it’s time to bring clarity with three guiding pillars.
Color Story
Choose 2-3 tones that anchor your home. These may be calming neutrals, earthy tones, or vibrant accents; whatever aligns with your desired feelings.
Textures & Materials
Do you love cozy linen, natural wood, smooth marble, or polished metals? Your tactile preferences matter. Check out the inspo here from our Functional Sanctuary project.
Function & Flow
Think about how you want your home to work. Do you thrive in open, airy layouts? Or do you feel safe and nurtured in cozy, layered rooms?
When every design decision connects back to these pillars, your home naturally shifts from mishmash to harmony.
“Your home should never feel like a compromise. It should feel like you; fully intentional, soulful, and beautifully aligned.” ~ Catherine
The secret to interiors that feel good isn’t buying more furniture or filling every wall. It’s intention. I said it – you don’t need MORE – you need intent and clear direction.
When you choose with purpose — whether it’s the paint color on the walls, the placement of a chair, or the type of light you bring in – you’re creating an environment that supports your energy.
Intention brings clarity. Every piece has a role, and nothing feels random.
Intention shifts energy. A cohesive home changes how you feel when you wake up, work, or gather with loved ones.
Intention is transformational. A well-aligned home can spark change in other areas of your life; whether it’s confidence, creativity, and even relationships.
Your home becomes a living mirror, reflecting not who you were, but who you are becoming.
If you’ve ever felt like you “don’t have a style,” know this: style isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you uncover. And you already have everything you need to begin.
Start small. Maybe it’s choosing a color palette that feels nourishing. Maybe it’s editing out what no longer fits. Or maybe it’s finally allowing yourself to say, “This is what I love.” Each intentional step brings you closer to a home that feels cohesive, grounding, and deeply you – and unapologetically so. While you’re at it – check out this post where we talk about the design parallels of interiors and our clothes.
And if you’re ready for guidance, this is exactly why I created the Design Concierge Intensive. In one organized and dedicated day together, we’ll uncover your style story, map out a clear framework for your home, and give you the confidence to move forward with clarity and purpose.
Because your home should never feel like a compromise. It should feel like you – completely intentional, soulful, and beautifully aligned.
Your home should feel like it was designed for you – because it was. Let’s create the framework that helps you finally claim your style. Now that’s the impact we love.
