5 Tips To Build The Perfect Coffee Table Ensemble

July 16, 2020

I can often be found in the dance studio (or my kitchen) working on my bachata form or creating with my kids and husband, who inspire me daily and are the "why" behind what I do. An avid baker, I am often making a new bread recipe, baking homemade cinnamon rolls, or desperately trying to drink the rest of my coffee while it's hot. My mission? To help others create and cultivate a home that they love!

Want to have a coffee table decor ensemble that looks like it belongs in a magazine?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There’s a formula for that! Varying heights as well as textures and adding interest with items that speak to your personality is key. Can you crack the code?

Let’s start with the basics:

The proper scale is key; you want to incorporate items of varying scale and proportion that also speak to your style. The trick to a designer look for this is using a formula to create the look and feel you want.

So, what’s the formula?

It begins with:

  • grounding the space to be decorated

  • Using items of varying heights

  • Incorporating different textures

  • Providing context

  • Adding your personality

Following these tips will have you well on your way how to your goal design.

The graphic above gives you a photographic translation of these tips – no matter your style, these will help you create a look that you love!

Below is an example from a recent client that used my tips to create the look that truly spoke to their personal style.

Beautiful, isn’t it!? She wanted a space that she could look out on while working from home that felt comforting, inviting, and peaceful. That’s incredibly important, especially in current times.

By applying items my client already had, I was able to create a concept that provided the feel for the decor – their personal touches are the “Piece de resistance”.

As for what NOT to do:

  • Don’t buy items because they’re “trendy” when they’re not your style

  • Don’t overload the table with decor – after all, it’s still a table that you need to be functional (strike the balance between decor & function)

  • Don’t purchase items that don’t match the scale of your table. If you’re out shopping, have your table measurements, or a paper cut to the size so you can create a layout on top of it if necessary. Balance your proportions.

Still stumped? I’m here to help!

Cheers!

Catherine
