Hello again home lovers! I’m back with an update on this week’s progress on the kitchen renovation project.
A few weeks ago, I found the most beautiful mortar & pestle at a garage sale a few doors down from our house. They say you know when the light bulb comes on – and oh boy did it ever!?
If you’re just tuning in, catch up on the last few weeks:
I was so inspired from this live-in appearance of the kitchen item that it really solidified what I wanted for our kitchen to feel home-y and welcoming, with that earthy touch that has come to be my signature. That piece that no one can quite put their finger on, yet they feel its’ presence.
Over the weekend, my brother-in-law came over to help us remove the granite slab from the raised bar portion of the kitchen and after removing the bead board backing that was covering the wall surface, removing the granite was basically a piece of cake. Although, it is quite heavy! The bar has been bothering me for some time, yet my kids have been constantly bonking their heads on it for years and I felt it was truly time for it to go now.
When I was removing the backsplashes, I hit a hard stop on the last piece because of how it was fastened to the wall and hit an almost 90 degree angle to the bar top. I knew there was no way to remove the backsplash without removing the top first, and that was not something I could tackle myself. That being the case, it also solidified that we wanted to change the granite as well. Up until then, I had been unsure whether to keep the existing stone, or replace it. If you know me, I don’t like to waste anything. So, I’m going to try and sell the granite they we have to recoup some of the costs and/or find a way to repurpose at least some of the material elsewhere. Outdoor bar and kitchen area, anyone?
Decisions.…decisions.
Next up this week is the priming and painting of both the walls and the ceiling, as well as prepping the cabinet boxes to be primed. Check back next week for the writeup on how that goes!
So nice to have family around to lend a hand with my expeditions!
Here’s a peek at how it’s going to look:
– This is a 3D conceptual rendering that depicts the cabinet colors as well as the general feel of the space once it is completed
– One thing I haven’t been able to decide on yet is what hardware to use.
Is this how my clients feel when they have a million choices? I think so. Considering that I’m building all of the new doors and drawer fronts from scratch, and will then have to put holes in them for new hardware, I want to be sure that I get it right the first time.
Coming up on the agenda: painting the window frame. AHHHHHH!!! Can you tell I’m excited!?? Oh my gosh, I have dreamt about this look for so long and it feels incredible that I am making this happen on my own. In me dreams, I do wish the window was larger, but I will happily take what I can get right now.
This kitchen is going to be the very embodiment of my personal style and the pieces that make a design truly mine.
Ready for more? I know I am! Come back next week for the latest updates and what comes next!
